The roots of Jazz dance began with African-American Jazz music.  Jazz dance exploded in popularity in the late 1940’s and 50’s.  Luigi, Gene Kelly, Bob Fosse and many more fabulous choreographers and dancers hit the Broadway stage and the big screen!

Just recently has jazz dance has once again taken front and center, thanks to innovative choreographers.  But, today’s jazz, although true to its roots, has splintered into a many different styles. Lyrical, contemporary, hip hop and musical theatre are just a few of the most popular styles.

There are many movements that are done with all these different styles but the roots still go back to “classical” jazz dance.  Such as, isolations, working in parrallel and forced arched turns and walks.

Jazz dance style will follow the music.  One thing is for sure, no matter what style of jazz dance, it is fun to watch and even more fun to perform.
